Mid
/ High Amplifiers. Both the mid and high frequency amplifiers inside
the EPAK 2500R are Class AB, Push-Pull amplifier circuits using Metal
Oxide Silicon Field Effect Transistors (MOSFET) output stage devices.
This topology was chosen because of the performance benefits it
delivers in mid and high frequency applications. Both amplifiers are
coupled to their respective drivers through transformer balanced
speaker outputs that assist in minimizing and limiting intermodulation
distortion artifacts when the amplifiers are operate under clipping
conditions. Controlling clipping behavior increases audible dynamic
range and provides higher headroom rewarding you with the highest
possible audio quality in the critical mid and high operating bands.
Mid Bass and Low Frequency Amplifiers. KV2 Audio has developed an
exceptional amplifier topology for Mid Bass and Subwoofer applications.
We built upon a proprietary design to deliver a completely new
amplifier topology whose performance characteristics are ideal for
driving subwoofers. It delivers 1600 watts of continuous power along
while also operating with very high efficiency within its operating
bandwidth. This minimizes losses that generate heat and deteriorate
ideal operating conditions. More importantly we focused on the type of
operating relationship that could be created with the woofer?s mass
(cone assembly) in order to provide the highest amount of control even
under the worst of operating conditions. The key-optimizing
characteristic of the amplifier system is its ability to increase
current output under phase shift conditions encountered with large
diaphragm woofers. The key part of the amplifier design that provides
this feature is in the voltage amplifier?s ideal method of supplying
stored up current to the output stage when phase shift conditions
demand higher current at lower voltage levels. The result is a dramatic
improvement in the control of the speaker?s mass and superior bass
reproduction quality.
Robust mechanical design.
The EPAK 2500R is enclosed in a four rack space, road-rugged steel
metal case. A high efficiency toroidal transformer is located at the
front of the enclosure in order to evenly distribute weight and to
ensure that chassis flex is eliminated as the unit is transported. The
unit can be moved using two large, ergonomically designed aluminum
molded handles. All electronic circuit boards are mounted on individual
aluminum heat sinks, which are then mounted on a secondary, internal
sealed steel chassis. This leaves only the heat sink fins exposed and
securely seals all circuit boards and components. Two large format,
shock mounted fans move air across the fins but never across any of the
electronic components minimizing maintenance cycles and extending the
component lifespan.
Easy-to-use controls?including a couple of unique new ones.
System setup procedures for a EPAK 2500R are very straight forward. The
first setup requirement is to select the combination of bass modules to
be used along with the ES 1.0 Mid /High module. A six-position switch
allows the selection of the following combinations:
- One ES 1.5 single fifteen-inch compact bass module
- Two ES 1.5 single fifteen-inch compact bass modules
- Three ES 1.5 single fifteen-inch compact bass module
- One ES 2.5 double fifteen-inch high output bass module
- One ES 1.5 and one ES 1.8 single eighteen-inch high output bass module
- Two ES 1.8 single eighteen-inch high output bass modules
Although
the EPAK 2500R actively drives a single ES 1.0 Mid /High module, you
can set up two ES 1.0 cabinets to work together in a single loudspeaker
system using two EPAK 2500R?s per side. A two-position switch allows
the EPAK 2500R to engage a specific set of filters and operating
parameters for using either one or two ES 1.0?s per side.
System Level and Bass Level Control. Rotary knobs allow level control
adjustments between ?6dB and +6dB. System Level affects the entire
loudspeaker system including bass modules; Bass Level affects the
output level of the bass modules only with the added advantage of also
adjusting phase response in coherence with level.
EXTENSION and ATTACK: KV2 Audio has developed a proprietary electronic
bass management circuit that provides deep, controlled bass extension.
This super-fast circuit is completely transparent and is not based on
changes in equalization, addition of limiters or the integration of
compression to the signal.
Bass EXTENSION is generated by ?charging? the bass extension circuit
with the high-energy transient signal that occurs below a pre-selected
frequency. The circuit produces a signal that is resembles the original
signal at a level that does not clip the amplifier and does this over
three cycles instead of one. The resulting amount of total power is the
same as found in the original high-energy transient signal, but the
addition of time and the reduction in peaks results in the woofer
having time to reproduce long wavelength effectively.
When ATTACK is selected, the EPAK 2500 uses its 1600 watts of power to
reproduce the input signal in the low frequency band pass with control
and authority. The ES system was developed primarily for use in live
applications where peak transient signals typically 10-15dB above real
usage levels. Available low frequency amplifier power is primarily used
for reproduction of these transients. Every KV2 bass module has been
developed to provide depth, definition but especially attack that can
be experienced at substantial distances away from the enclosure. The
ATTACK setting provides true, pure, high dynamic bass reproduction.
Three system LEDS show various modes of operation. First there is a
POWER ON LED that indicates that the unit is ON and is ready to
operate. There is also a LED to indicate that signal is present. This
is helpful for trouble shooting signal path problems as the LED will
come on as signal becomes present. The EPAK 2500R uses a very fast, RMS
power limiting system that when engaged turns the GREEN SIGNAL PRESENT
LED to RED. To disengage the limiter, simply lower the input signal
level or the master level control. A RED LED indicates that the unit
has entered a thermal shutdown / auto reset condition. The unit will
automatically reset when the temperature has reached safe operating
levels. There is also a 5-bar signal input level LED meter providing
accurate monitoring of input level signal levels.
The ON /OFF control is a combination power / circuit breaker switch
which provides secure, safe protection from AC spikes and associated
problems.
The rear panel
features all signal, speaker outputs and AC mains I/O connectors. There
is a main signal input connector and through signal output for
connecting to other amplifiers. There are two pre-outs or insert points
available, one each for the Mid/High and Subwoofer signal paths. This
allows insertion of signal processing as required by specific system
applications. These pre-outs allow you to receive, process and return
the signals for the individual Mid/High and Subwoofer cabinets.
There are also two speaker outputs on the panel, one is a female AP6
connector for the ES 1.0 mid / high module. The other is a four pin
female AP4 connector for any of the KV2 Audio bass modules.
The AC mains connector is a Neutrik PowerCon rated up to 250V. The unit
can run on either 115V or 230V mains and operational voltage can be
changed in the field.
